The high street is responding to growing demand by bringing out catwalk-inspired outfits in higher sizes. Here’s how to take advantage of the boom in plus-size fashion.

1. Made to fit: Curves are fabulous – looks at Christina Hendricks in Mad Men – so don’t be afraid to celebrate yours. Instead of disguising your figure in loose smocks and bump-skimming fabrics, opt for tailored outfits such as waist-cinching dresses and figure-hugging suits. 2. Know your shape: The main rule when it comes to choosing clothes that look fabulous on you is that it isn’t about size – it’s about shape. Plus-size figures come in all sorts of different shapes: from apples, who put weight on around the middle but tend to have slender legs and ankles; to pear shapes, who carry an extra weight around the bottom and thighs. As a rule, the former should go for belts that lie just below the breasts and plunging v-neck lines to create the illusion of a small waist while showing off their pretty pins in short skirts and heels. The latter look best in dresses which emphasise the shoulders and waist and skim over the bottom.
3. What are your assets? Most women have a ‘least-favourite’ part of their body – but what’s your favourite? Perhaps you have a curvy waist, shapely ankles or a fabulous cleavage? It’s what’s underneath that counts: When it comes to elegant dressing, plus-size women have a secret weapon: underwear. There’s a huge variety of control underwear out there, and not all of it is of the Bridget Jones variety. Look for pants and tights that suck in your waist and bottom and bras that provide the maximum level of support. If you’re keen to avoid unsightly lumps and bumps then it’s crucial to wear a well-fitting bra, too, so get yourself measured by an expert before you buy. For nights out or special occasions, a corset will also help emphasise your curves and give your clothes a smooth line.
Be a dark horse: In general, dark colours tend to be more slimming and flattering than bright or light colours. This doesn’t mean you have to live in black – experiment with a palette of deep shades such as royal blue, dark green and purple. To brighten up the look, teem a dark-coloured dress with a bright jacket or accessories.
Be a trend-setter: There’s no reason why you shouldn’t be first with the current trends – but make sure you pick and choose your styles. This season’s large, bright prints, for example, won’t flatter most plus-size figures. On the other hand, the stylish polka dots that have also been seen on the catwalk are the perfect choice if your figure is on the curvy side. Add fashion-forward marine motif accessories to finish off the look.
Classic cool: Instead of splurging every season on a range of outfits that you soon ditch because they don’t flatter your shape, work on developing a capsule wardrobe.
