Nightclubs open for plus size people
By Emma Cossey on 06 Nov 2009

I'm very much in support of providing everyone with an equal opportunity in most areas of life. Saying that, I was a little bemused when I heard about the new trend for plus-size nightclubs. The nightclubs have started to spring up across the USA, and they have been created to cater for a population with an increasing waist size. The plus size nightclubs aim to make those that fall into the plus size bracket comfortable in a club environment, without feeling paranoid of their size.

One of the clubs, Bounce in California, hopes to beat the 'fatist' door staff, and attracts an equal measure of men and women. The interesting thing is that most of the women are plus size, whilst only a quarter of the men are.

I have to say, I find this a little odd. When I go clubbing, the shapes and sizes of people vary wildly. Perhaps this is different in the USA, but in the UK I'd seriously doubt anyone would get turned away from the door for being too big. This might be the case in some of the posh celeb clubs, but really...I've been to some of them and they're an overpriced load of nonsense!

There are health worries involved too, with many believing that clubs like these will discourage people from losing weight. There may be some truth in this, but perhaps clubs like this can have a positive influence too. If those who are plus size can go somewhere where they feel more accepted and comfortable, then they may become more content in their everyday life and resort less to comfort eating.
